CHERBOURG and neighbourhood
Cherbourg, la Cité de la Mer...

Of course, it is necessary for you to stroll in the city and humer this environment so particular to the harbour cities. But Cherbourg also offers what to satisfy the curious spirits...
The Cotentin Mill
La Lande
The Cotentin Mill is situated on the Fierville les Mines Moor at an altitude of 120 metres. The windmill is shaped like a tower, has 2 floors and was built in 1744. The framework, roof, sails and mechanism wera all reconstructed in 1997. The surrounding 3 hectares of earth have been sown with mature wheat and with saracen (buckwheat). The product harvested is ground at the mill and the flour produced is sold on site.
The Gatteville Lighthouse
Situated at the most northeastly point of the Cotentin Peninsula, the lighthouse signals one of the most dangerous parts of France's coastline. Built between 1829 and 1834, this imposing construction is built of 11,000 granite bricks and his height of 75 metres makes it the second tallest in France. Reaching the light at the summit is via a staircase made up of 365 steps lit by 52 windows. Its light reaches a distance of 50 kms and overlaps that of the Isle of Wight to the north and that of the Cap de la Hève to the East. An exhibition room recounts the development of the lighthouse's lighting system since its construction.
Birth Place of the painter : Jean-François Millet
Hameau Gruchy : A stone's throw from the cliffs and the sea, the house where the painter Jean-François Millet was born has opened its doors to the public. In this 19th century rustic house, you will discover objects and tools from the artist's daily life, reproductions of paintings and scenes of rural life, original sketches and drawings suggestives of the connection between Van-Gogh and Millet. The visit ends with a collection from "Angelus" and "the Gleaners".
La CITÉ DE LA MER à Octeville

"La Cité de la Mer" is a vast touristic, scientific and cultural complex like nothing else in Europe, entirely devoted to the human undersea adventure. On an outstanding site, Cherbourg's Transatlantic Harbour Station, it is to be opened to the public in the Summer of 2001.

In addition to the partial restoration of a rare monument and remnant of a prestigious past, two majors centres are to be constructed :

  • a dry dock designed to receive the world's largest visitable submarine, the Redoutable,
  • a Permanent Exhibition Hall, around a new generation giant cylindrical aquarium, and wich is to develop science and museum platforms devoted : first to an understanding of the world of submarines, as an extension to the visit of the Redoutable, and secondly, to the exploration and use of the wealth of underwater biological, industrial and archaeological materia
